American Presbyterian author (1929–2020)
Jay Edward Adams (January 30, 1929 – November 14, 2020) was an American Presbyterian preacher and author who was known for his development in the mid and late 20th century of counseling based on Biblical scriptures. He published more than 100 books related to this topic, which have been translated into 16 languages.[1]
After decades in practice, Adams wrote Competent to Counsel (1970), which was highly influential for biblical pastoral theology. He also founded The Institute for Nouethetic Studies, putting together a curriculum to support such work. It has trained practitioners and also served as a center of resources for this practice and related studies. His approach was evangelical and conservative.
Nouthetic counseling
According to an interview by Aaron Blumer, Adams' major influence on counseling was based on his book Competent to Counsel, published in 1970, when he was about 40 years old. Edward adams photographer!
