Early Life and Education
Shirley Scott began her musical journey as a child, studying piano and trumpet. She later attended the Ornstein School of Music before joining her brother's orchestra.
The Hammond Organ and Breakthrough
In 1955, Scott mastered the Hammond organ, becoming one of few female jazz organists. From 1956 to 1960, she performed in the trio of saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis.
Jazz Collaborations
Over the next decade, Scott collaborated with notable jazz musicians. She played in the combo of tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine (whom she married in 1961), Count Basie's big band, Jimmy Forrest's ensembles (1978), and Dexter Gordon's groups (1982).
